Aerbaijani khanates were a collection of provinces and principalities situated in the South Caucasus. They first appeared during the medieval era, following the prolonged rule of the Arabic Caliphates and the subsequent conquest of the region by the Seljuk Turks. The khanates were primarily governed by Khans of Turkic descent.
By 1823, the sovereignty of all the khanates had been relinquished as a consequence of an extensive military campaign initiated by the Tsarist Russia.
